Why a stopover in Stockholm is worthwhile, what you must see and where is the best place to stay overnight with your camper

21 Stockholm tips

Are you thinking about making a stopover in Stockholm during your trip to Sweden with your camper? We can understand you, because while you can find your happy place in nature with your big trailer and sometimes go through everyday life a little disheveled, a city quickly becomes

However, we have at least 21 reasons why we can highly recommend a stop in Sweden's capital without the stopover becoming chaos, because Stockholm really swept us away: We immersed ourselves in vintage stores, got lost in design and concept stores, nibbled through the most delicious bakeries and roamed the shops in the young districts. But the number of museums is also huge: ABBA, Fotografiska, the Vase Museum and so on.

1. RV parking space in a perfect location for walking into town. Prices and booking at Langholmens Husbilscamping .

2. The Hornstulls market is a flea market that takes place every weekend between April and September.

3. The Hornstull district is a colorful area with vintage stores, casual cafes and restaurants on both sides of the main street Hornsgatan . Here you will find, for example, the Svedjan Bageri , the vintage store Retro Zinken , the vegetarian restaurant Legumes or the delicious Fallafel Bar , where we ate and can highly recommend the hummus. 4. The district of Södermalm is adjacent to Hornstull. There are fewer clothing stores here, but at least as many cafes and restaurants, it is not very touristy and you can just go with the flow.

5. From Mariaberget and Skinnarviksberget you can get a wonderful view of Stockholm's old town.

6. The districts of Hornstull, Ormsaltaren, Södermalm and SoFo are located above and the Katarina Elevator provides the easiest and most exciting connection from bottom to top. A glass elevator takes you up to the top and a bridge takes you directly to the pretty little bouquets around the Mosebacka Torg park.

7. Götgatan is a small shopping street where you can discover well-known and unknown shops. Whether chain or owner-operated, record stores, the bakery Fabrique , the Designtorget - there is something for everyone here if you like the hustle and bustle. (Impressions pictures below)

8. The small Solrosparken utsiktsplats viewing point is an idyll in itself. Here you will also find a nice picnic table to have a snack and refuel your car for another leg of the journey through the city. (Impressions pictures below)

9. In the middle of the very busy street Götgatan there is a small park with a lawn (we had a VW Bus T3 with a pizza oven here in the summer of 2024) and a great playground for the children and a skate park called Björns trägard . (Impressions pictures below)

10. The trendy SuFo district is our favorite part of Stockholm because there are so many great shops here like Grandpa , the outdoor and surf shop 6|5|4 , Pärlans Konfektyr and Café Lykke is also a must. You can also eat out so well, for example at Cyclecafé Le Mond or at the no longer an insider tip Meatalls for the people (the veggie metalls are also super tasty).

11. Great playgrounds are always a must with children, so we discovered the Bryggartäppan playground, with cute little Swedish playhouses. There's even a kiosk there - how handy is that!

12. The Fotografiska Museum is known for its excellent and worthwhile exhibitions and is certainly not just a great museum for photographers.

13. Stockholm's old town is called Gamla Stan and is located on an island around which the rest of the city is clustered. Small alleys with pretty houses and the Royal Palace can be found there. You should definitely take a look at the Swedish restaurant Augustas Folksalong , which takes you back in time to 1880. If you head towards the French bistro Pastis , it gets a little quieter. Worth seeing, but already very touristy in our opinion. (Impressions pictures below)

14. On the island of Skeppsholmen there is an art museum and the art school. There is also a small car park where, if you are lucky, you can even spend the night with your camper. Incidentally, there is a ferry from there to the museum island of Djurgarden.

15. Junibacken is a children’s museum in which Astrid Lindgren naturally plays a major role, but also other Swedish stories and writers such as Pettersson and Findus, as well as Swedish history, are made tangible for children. There is a story train, indoor play areas and much more. The museum is recommended for children up to about 8 years of age.

16. For all older children, we can recommend the Vasa Museum . The old ship from 1628 has been lying on the bottom of Stockholm for centuries and is extremely well preserved. It was an exciting day for our knowledge-hungry son Leo, because the history surrounding it has been put together especially for children. (Impressions pictures below)

17. No, not an insider tip, but still so great that it has to be mentioned: The ABBA Museum . Of course, you should like the music of the Swedish pop band or admire the extravagant costumes of the band members.

18. The island of Djurgarden is the green lung of Stockholm, there are landscape gardens and parks such as Rosendals Trädgard , impressive houses and many different museums such as the children's museum Junibacken at number 15, the Vasa Museum at number 16 and the famous ABBA Museum at number 17. But the open-air museum Skansen is also highly recommended, vintage and Swedish history at its finest.

19. The district of Östermalm is a chic part of Stockholm, stylish bars, imposing buildings, designer boutiques and cultural institutions characterise the cityscape here.

20. If you are looking for a large pedestrian zone with well-known chains and shopping centers, you will find them in Norrmalm .

21. The former city apartment of Astrid Lindgren (1941 to 2002) is now also open to visitors and is located a little outside of all the other highlights. Tours must be booked in advance, which you can do here on the website.

Have fun city scrolling!
