21 Stockholm Tips

Are you considering a stopover in Stockholm during your campervan trip through Sweden? We understand, because while you can find your happy place in nature with your large caravan and sometimes feel a bit disheveled from everyday life, a city can quickly become overwhelming.

However, we have at least 21 reasons why we highly recommend a stop in Sweden's capital, without the layover turning into chaos, because Stockholm truly captivated us: We immersed ourselves in vintage stores, lost ourselves in design and concept shops, sampled the most delicious bakeries, and wandered through the shops of the trendy neighborhoods. And the number of museums is enormous: ABBA, Fotografiska, the Vase Museum, and so much more.

1. Motorhome pitch in a perfect location for walking into town. Prices and booking at Langholmens Husbilscamping .

2. The Hornstulls market is a flea market that takes place every weekend between April and September.

3. The Hornstull district is a vibrant and colorful area with vintage stores, casual cafes, and restaurants lining both sides of the main street , Hornsgatan . Here you'll find places like Svedjan Bageri , the vintage store Retro Zinken , the vegetarian restaurant Legumes , and the delicious Fallafel Bar , where we ate and highly recommend the hummus. (See photos below for impressions.)

4. The Södermalm district borders Hornstull. It has fewer clothing stores, but at least as many cafes and restaurants; it's not as touristy and is perfect for strolling around.

5. From Mariaberget and Skinnarviksberget you can get a wonderful view of Stockholm's old town.

6. The districts of Hornstull, Ormsaltaren, Södermalm, and SoFo are located above ground, and the Katarina Elevator offers the easiest and most exciting connection from the bottom to the top. A glass elevator takes you up to the top, and a bridge leads directly to the charming groves surrounding Mosebacka Torg park.

7. Götgatan is a small shopping street where you can discover both familiar and unfamiliar shops. Whether chain stores or independent businesses, record shops, the Fabrique bakery, or the Designtorget – there's something for everyone if you're in the mood for a lively atmosphere. 9. In the middle of the very busy street Götgatan there is a small park with a meadow (in the summer of 2024, there was a VW Bus T3 with a pizza oven here) and a great playground for the children and a skate park called Björns trägard . (Impressions from the pictures below)

10. The trendy SuFo district is our favorite neighborhood in Stockholm because it has so many great shops like Grandpa , the outdoor and surf shop 6|5|4 , Pärlans Konfektyr , and the must-visit Café Lykke . You can also find great places to eat, such as the Cyclecafé Le Mond or the no-longer-secret Meatalls for the People (the veggie meats are also delicious).

11. Great playgrounds are always a must-visit with kids, so we discovered Bryggartäppan playground, with cute little Swedish playhouses. Plus, there's even a kiosk – how convenient!

12. The Fotografiska Museum is known for its excellent and worthwhile exhibitions and is certainly not just a great museum for photographers.

13. Stockholm's Old Town is called Gamla Stan and is located on an island around which the rest of the city has clustered. There you'll find narrow lanes lined with pretty houses, as well as the Royal Palace. You should definitely check out the Swedish restaurant Augustas Folksalong , which is like stepping back in time to 1880. If you head towards the French bistro Pastis , things will get a bit quieter. Worth seeing, but we think it's quite touristy. (Impressions from the pictures below)

14. On the island of Skeppsholmen you'll find an art museum and an art school. There's also a small parking area where, with a bit of luck, you can even spend the night in your campervan. Incidentally, there's a ferry from there to the museum island of Djurgården.

15. The Junibacken is a children's museum in which Astrid Lindgren naturally plays a major role, But it also makes other Swedish stories and authors, such as Pettersson and Findus, and Swedish history accessible to children. There's a story train, indoor play areas, and much more. The museum is recommended for children up to about 8 years old.

16. For older children, we recommend the Vasa Museum . The ancient ship, dating back to 1628, lay on the seabed off Stockholm for centuries and is extremely well preserved. It was a fascinating day for our inquisitive son Leo, as the story surrounding it has been specially presented for children. (Impressions from the pictures below)

17. No, it's not a hidden gem, but it's still so great that it has to be mentioned: The ABBA Museum . Of course, you should like the music of the Swedish pop band or admire the extravagant costumes of the band members.

18. The island of Djurgården is Stockholm's green lung, boasting landscaped gardens and parks like Rosendals Trädgården , impressive houses, and numerous museums, including the Junibacken Children's Museum (15), the Vasa Museum (16), and the famous ABBA Museum (17). The Skansen open-air museum is also highly recommended, offering a glimpse into vintage Swedish history at its finest.

19. The Östermalm district is a more upscale area of Stockholm, characterized by stylish bars, imposing buildings, designer boutiques and cultural institutions.

20. If you are looking for a large pedestrian zone with well-known chains and shopping centers, you will find it in Norrmalm .

21. Astrid Lindgren's (1941 to 2002) former city apartment is now also open to visitors and is located somewhat apart from the other main attractions. Guided tours must be booked in advance; you can do so here on the website.
